When we set about developing the world's first supercharged 981 Cayman S, we had just one lofty goal – exceed the performance of the venerable Cayman GT4 RS. Capitalizing on our extensive experience in supercharging the 3.4L and 3.8L engines in the 991 Carreras, we set about designing a very compact supercharger and drive system that could fit the Cayman/Boxster platform without any cutting or modification of the chassis. Our supercharger of choice for this project is the compact but very powerful Rotrex C38R head unit, capable of supporting up to 800hp, and spins up to 90,000 rpm using a proprietary planetary gear mechanism. The end result of our development program is a supercharger system that increases power output of your Cayman by over 200hp!No expense was spared in creating the most reliable and best performing supercharger kit available for the Porsche Cayman and Boxster. Every component is designed to meet and exceed the high expectations of our customers:
Why Supercharge?
Using a centrifugal supercharger is a very effective method to adding power to a normally aspirated platform while maintaining the desirable characteristics of the original engine. For instance, the best of NA engines, such as Porsche's 9A1 flat six fitted to the 981 platform, are praised for building their performance in a linear manner. This results in an exciting driving experience that thrives on revs, but also results in more balanced handling compared to turbocharged platforms. Specifically, some turbocharged cars tend to build their performance in one large rush, which can disturb handling balance and create a more "one-dimensional" driving experience that draws away some excitement and drivability associated with NA engines. By contrast to a turbo that is powered by energy from exhaust gasses, a centrifugal supercharger is driven off the engine and builds boost in proportion to the revolutions of the engine. In our supercharger kit, this results in significantly more power over a stock engine, while maintaining the linear power delivery, emotional sound, and rev-happy nature of the Porsche flat sixes that we know and love.
You might also ask, why not simply build my engine to achieve greater displacement? There are several reasons as to why large displacement engine builds cannot be considered a superior option to centrifugal supercharging. First of all, there is not any inherent quality of a large-displacement engine build that makes the engine more robust. On the contrary, increasing displacement through extra-large bores reduces head gasket sealing area. Also, increasing crank stroke through offset machining increases piston velocities and reduces rod bearing area. These two factors inherently reduce engine reliability instead of improving it. We will not even mention the significant cost of undertaking an engine-building project…
